Lady Gaga will star in and compose new music for this generation’s remake of A Star is Born, also starring Bradley Cooper in his directorial debut.
Before you cry, “Unbelievable!” consider that each actress who took on the Esther role was first a mega-star in her own right. There was plenty of wattage with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson in 1976, Judy Garland and James Mason in 1954, and Janet Gaynor and Fredric March in 1937.
Lady Gaga, with her persona of both outrageousness and vulnerability, could be just right for a role that shows the rapid ascent of a singer’s career, while her mentor’s stardom nosedives.
But can she act? Lady Gaga proved herself with other credits and her portrayal of the countess on FX’s American Horror Story, which won her a Golden Globe. She also has six Grammys and an Oscar best song nomination.
Even Lady Gaga’s collaboration with virtuoso Tony Bennett on their 2014 Cheek to Cheek album can be compared to the mentor relationship between Esther and Norman in the movie.
Can Bradley Cooper pull off the self-destructive Norman? “I’m elated to be directed by and starring with Bradley in this project. He’s a brilliant visionary artist,” tweeted Lady Gaga. Cooper is also sharing scriptwriting credit with Will Fetters (Remember Me).
After Beyonce declined the part of Esther, the Warner Bros. project seemed to wither in development. Now that the remake is reborn, production begins early 2017 in California.
